Choosing the Right Carbon Fiber Reinforcement

With so many different types of carbon fiber reinforcement available, it can be difficult to understand the differences between them and how to choose the right one for a particular project.

In this video tutorial, we discuss how properties such as fabric weight, weave, tow-size (k-count) and fabric format affect the handling and performance of the reinforcement, and how to choose the right one for your application.

I am interested in making my own handle scales for knives. What's the best way to manufacture these using your 2/2 twill cloth ? I have a pressure pot and a vacuum pump set that I use for stabilizing wood.

If you are looking to machine the blocks down, you will have no choice but to lay up the carbon in multiple layers to get the desired thickness.  If the scales are moulded, you only need the carbon for the moulded surface.  You could then back fill with a casting resin.

On 10:10 you're saying that my final laminate's thickness will be 450g cloth=0.45mm (I assume that this is after resin injection). On 13:05 you are measuring the dry 450g cloth and it said 0.45mm thickness. So the infusion of the resin will not affect my final part's thickness?

It depends on the weave of the cloth but many cloths have negligible compression under vacuum. Some other clothes, like our 650g for example, have measurable compression so the consolidated thickness is slightly less than the nominal thickness off the roll.
