High quality black aramid flat braid in a 17mm (0.7") width. This 300gsm (8.8oz/yd²) woven aramid braid is great for use as an edging tape on composite paddles and can also be used for additional protection on performance canoes and kayaks. It can be used in a variety of applications where a high strength or abrasion resistant composite reinforcement is required.
This braid is sold by the linear meter (1 meter = 1.09 yards).

Used as an edging tape for kayak/canoe paddles and also for more discrete reinforcement on composite kayaks/canoes, this narrower 17mm (0.7") 300gsm (8.6oz/yd²) braid is woven from a 1210dtex Black aramid yarn, directly equivalent to Kevlar (a brand name for aramid). The fiber is woven in such a way that the braid is 'flat', i.e. it is not a tube/sleeve but instead resembles a densely woven tape. The fiber orientation of the tape is +/- 45 degrees which means that the braid is ideally suited to handling torsional loads, affords excellent conformity (drape) without buckling the fibers and resists crack propagation.
Whilst the 25mm (1") Aramid Flat Braid can be used for joining or protecting joins in composite panels, the 17mm (0.7") is ideal for adding a more discrete layer of protection. Its narrower profile makes it great for edging paddles for protection against wear and also to comply with sporting regulation where minimum radii are in place.
The braid should be wet-out with resin such as our EL2 Laminating Epoxy or ER1 Rapid Repair Epoxy and if required, over-coated with another coat of resin to create tough, durable protection to more vulnerable/high wear areas, such as paddle tips.
Aramid flat braid is compatible with all conventional resin systems including polyester, vinylester and epoxy resin. Most commonly, the braid is applied to the outside seam of canoes and kayaks to completely overlap the join between the upper and lower hull moldings. The braid is then simply wet-out with epoxy resin and then once cured, over-painted once more with another coat of epoxy resin to create an extremely tough, durable and protective join.
How to Buy
This 17mm (0.7") flat aramid braid is sold by the linear meter (with the braid at its natural 45° orientation) in a continuous length. For example; if you purchase a quantity of '5' you will receive a continuous length of braid 5m (5.5yd) long. There is no minimum order quantity but several volume discounts are available for larger quantities.
Further Information
The lightweight flat braid on this page has a nominal width of 17mm (0.7") although, in common with all braids, elongating or shortening the braid will change its width ranging from 22mm (0.86") when bunched to 12mm (1/2") when pulled taught.

For wet-lay lamination you will use a bit more resin than the weight of the fabric. A typical fibre resin ratio for Aramid based fabrics is 45/55. For example, with a 300gsm cloth, for 1 square metre you will have 300g of fabric and thus will need 367g of resin to wet it out, plus a small amount of wastage for the brush and mixing pot.

No. Our Kevlar Fabric is only available in the classic Kevlar yellow.
We do not currently stock any hybrid pre-pregs either as carbon-aramid mix or pure aramid
Aramid and Diolen laminates can be drilled into using a HSS drill bit designed for drilling steel. Start with a pilot hole and work up the diameter until the desired hole size is achieved. Any aramid/diolen fluff can be cut off with a sharp Stanley blade or scalpel.
