Airex® T10.100 is a closed cell, thermoplastic foam for use as a core material in composite laminates.
In a 2mm (approx. 0.08") thickness, Airex T10.100 makes a highly conformable structural core material, ideally suited for use in ultra-light composites including UAV wing skins and fuselage laminates where its very smooth finish, low resin uptake and in particular its conformability make it a very effective and practical way to produce high performance, lightweight sandwich laminates.
This 2mm thickness is produced using a 'peeling' process, rather than a saw cut, resulting in the smoothest possible surface finish.
Key Features
Conformability
The foam has a nominal density of 100kg/m³ (6.24 lb/ft³) and mechanical properties similar to closed cell PVC foam but what sets T10.100 apart from PVC is the ease with which it can be conformed to curved mold surfaces.
At 2mm thickness, T10.100 will follow milder curvatures, such as wing skins, with almost no resistance, making it easy to hand laminate and vacuum bag sandwich laminate wing skins without the foam trying to lift off the curvature. Even on tight curvatures, T10.100 at 2mm thickness is almost impossible to snap, making it possible to follow tighter curvatures such as the inside of a UAV fuselage.
Processing
Airex T10.100 can be used with a wide range of lamination processes, including wet-lay/hand lamination (with or without vacuum bag), resin infusion, prepreg processing, compression molding and thermoforming.
For prepreg processing - the maximum processing temperature is 150°C, although compressive strength reduces with temperature and care must be taken to not exceed the compressive strength of the foam when curing at elevated temperature.
For resin infusion - please note that the foam listed on this page is not drilled or grooved. In most situations, frequent drill-holes through the foam would be required to facilitate resin flow through the foam.
How to Buy
We are currently only stock Airex T10.100 in 2mm thickness, due to the excellent suitability of this thickness for use in wing skins and similar lightweight laminates.
Due to difficultly of shipping large sheets of thin foam, T10.100 is only available to buy online in sheet sizes of 1000mm x 607mm (39" x 24"), although in almost all applications there is no disadvantage to butt-joining multiple sheets of foam as required.
